Fantasy football: The most picked player in 2017/18 so far

Hundreds of thousands of you have already signed up to play Dream Team this season – with just over three weeks to go until the Premier League gets underway.

Arsenal and Leicester kick off proceedings on August 11, but you’ll need to have your fantasy football sides carefully picked and prepared before then to gain your best shot at that £750k prize pot.

Dream Team is back and bigger than ever

But who is the most picked player so far ahead of the new season?

Well, by some distance, it is… (drum roll please)

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku will have to raise to a certain standard at Manchester United, says Wayne Rooney

Lukaku is by far and away the most picked player so far

Dream Team managers clearly feel the Belgian striker’s change of scenery since completing his £75m move to Manchester United earlier this month will turn him into a points scoring machine.

Lukaku, who got off the mark in United red against Real Salt Lake on Monday night in the US, has been selected by an astonishing 59.1% of managers who have signed up to play so far.

How did Lukaku get on in fantasy football last season?

The 24-year-old scored 25 Premier League goals for Everton last season and was set for the Golden Boot before Harry Kane’s late heroics.

Lukaku is currently ahead of Kane (48.1%) and Alexandre Lacazette (33%) in the most picked standings – with the rest of the top 20 available to see here.

Lacazette is also very popular

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s future ruined by injury and Diego Costa set to return to Spain this summer, there’s a real lack of depth in terms of world class attackers in the top flight.

That might explain why Lukaku (£6m) is so popular, particularly considering he is valued at £2m less than Kane (£8m) on the Dream Team game.
