Fantasy football 2017/18: How much will Benjamin Mendy cost you next season?

The French defender is Manchester City's third summer signing and will set pulses racing on Dream Team next season

Benjamin Mendy is Premier League bound, setting both Manchester City fans and fantasy football officiandos’ pulses racing.

The Monaco left back reportedly agreed a £39.8m transfer to City on Friday, becoming their third summer signing already and bringing their spending to over £100m in just shy of a week.

Pep Guardiola is not hanging around, acquiring both Ederson from Benfica and Mendy’s Monaco team-mate Bernardo Silva less than two weeks after the end of the Premier League season.

Mendy, like many at Monaco, has had a stunning breakthrough season in France and was a key member of the side that won Ligue 1 and reached the Champions League semi-finals.

The 22-year-old could replace French compatriot Gael Clichy at left back while competing with Serbian defender Aleksandar Kolarov for a first-team berth.

His performances for Monaco this season saw him rewarded with a first France cap in their World Cup qualifying win over Luxembourg in March.

Mendy was also being tracked by Liverpool, but it is City who have won the race to sign him with another massive summer splurge as they prepare to part with £300m on new players this summer.

What could this mean for your fantasy football team?

Mendy might not be a household name in English football yet but his consistent displays last season for a bristling Monaco side suggest he could well be on the way to becoming one.

WhoScored, Dream Team’s ratings providers, gave him an impressive overall season rating of 7.31 and Ligue 1 rating of 7.25.

To put that in some context, only PSG’s Layvin Kurzawa and Guingamp’s Fernando Marcal performed better in terms of Ligue 1 full backs.

As for his Premier League counterparts, Mendy’s league rating is only bettered by Marcus Alonso in the full back positions and he was playing a lot further forward for Chelsea.

He’s a powerful defender who loves to buccaneer forward so should fit seamlessly into the Guardiola style of play.

Mendy is likely to be an extremely popular Dream Team pick given City’s sheer mass of games both domestically in the Premier League and cup competitions and in Europe in the Champions League.

And given the initial values of the likes of Nathaniel Clyne (4.5m) and Danny Rose (£4.0m) last season, we reckon he’ll be priced in the same region in the 2017/18 game.

When can I sign up?

You can start getting your teams in as early as July 3 2017 – some six weeks before the Premier League season gets underway.

That gives you an awfully long time to monitor the transfer market and choose your team accordingly, with City’s new signings likely to be hot on the agenda for Dream Team managers.

The closing date for the season game, therefore, will be the first day of the Premier League campaign on August 12 2017.
