Jose Mourinho has been secretly advising England Manager Gareth Southgate to ensure Marcus Rashford plays at right-back.
The news comes after the Man United youngster was deployed in a right wing-back role for the Three Lions against Belgium.
Rashford has often suffered from Mourinho’s defensive tactics at Man United and hasn’t had the license to express himself.
England duty was meant to be the time when the youngster could flourish in an attacking role, however it has been more of the same for Rashford at the World Cup.
The 20-year-old started upfront against Belgium but missed a huge chance to put England 1-0 up.
It was that miss and conversations with Mourinho that made up Southgate’s mind about Rashford’s best position.
Lee Satchell, an unofficial England insider, told us: “Gareth spent his entire half-time team talk in discussion with Jose.
“The Man United boss agreed that Rashford was a good striker, but he is even better when used as a defender.
“Rashford will actually be starting in that position for United next season, after Jose said ‘we will be shipping out Mateo Darmian to make sure Rashford gets minutes at right-back.’
“Jose kept telling Gareth how good Jesse Lingard was at ‘fake right-back’ last year, but insisted he would use Rashford as an out-and-out right-back next season.’
Mourinho will continue to advise Southgate as the tournament develops.
