Gareth Southgate was left with a difficult decision to make at half-time of England’s friendly with France on Tuesday night when several players requested to be substituted.
England’s friendly clashed with the start of Love Island, leaving several players looking for an early exit.
Source Lee Satchell explained: “Gareth came in at half-time and asked how the lads were doing.
“There was a bit of an awkward silence and then all of a sudden they started coming up with random excuses about needing to come off.
“Hamstring this, cramp that. Too much lunch, not enough dinner. Honestly, all sorts of excuses. Then all of their iPhone alarms started going off at once.
“In the end they had to come clean.
“All of them were trying to watch Love Island. They’ve been hooked ever since it started. Poor Gareth didn’t have a clue what they were on about.
“He tried to tell them to put it on record but they said it wasn’t the same. You can’t watch it on record when you’ve already seen the Marcel memes all over Twitter and Instagram.
“So Gareth ended up having to hook a load of them and replace them with the older lot, who didn’t know what Love Island was.”
“I’ve never seen anything like it.”
