Liverpool close in on Chelsea’s most promising striker for bargain fee

Chelsea aren’t the first club you think of when it comes to progressing youngsters into the first-team.

The likes of Josh McEachren, Gael Kakuta and Jeffrey Bruma were all heralded as future squad members only to see opportunities fail to materialise.

Dominic Solanke looks set to be the latest player to leave Stamford Bridge in search of first-team football, with Liverpool lining up a summer move for the 19-year-old, according to the Evening Standard.

Chelsea are reportedly unwilling to meet his £50,000-a-week wage demands meaning he’ll be free to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Blues will be entitled to compensation of at least £8million for Solanke, as he’s under the age of 24, but will be powerless to hold onto him.

Solanke, who’s represented England Under-21s on three occasions, spent last season on loan at Eredivisie side Vitesse, scoring seven goals.

Despite his lack of senior appearances for Chelsea- which stand at just one Champions League clash- Solanke has been a prolific goalscorer at youth level.

He’s lifted the FA Youth Cup twice, won the UEFA Youth League, in which he finished as the top scorer, and been named Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year.

At international level he was part of the England squad that won the Under-17 European Championships in 2014, again finishing as top goalscorer, and lifted the Victory Shield two years earlier.

But his future appears to lie away from the club he’s represented since the Under-8s, with Solanke himself reportedly telling friends he’s heading to Merseyside.

Liverpool would appear an odd choice, especially as Jurgen Klopp already has a young striker looking for first-team football in Divock Origi.

But wherever Klopp has managed he’s looked to promote youth so Solanke stands a better chance of playing than he does at Chelsea, especially with Diego Costa signing a new contract.

You never know though, he could turn out to be the new Robert Lewandowski.
