Top-level footballers go to extraordinary lengths to get ahead of their peers.
From Laurent Blanc kissing Fabien Barthez’s bald head to David James spitting at the walls of an empty urinal there’s nothing footballers haven’t tried.
Jesse Lingard’s tactic isn’t quite as quirky, but it did catch our attention.
Lingard, who was included in Gareth Southgate’s first England squad, wears Adidas X 16.1 boots when he plays.

Nothing particularly strange in that, in fact they are the most favoured boot among players in the Premier League at the moment.
What is peculiar is the way in which he laces his boots, as he showed off against Stoke last weekend.
As far as we are aware Lingard is the only player who laces his boots, using three eyelets rather than five, in this way.
He also appears to tear the top of the sock attached to his boot and wrap his laces around, as you would do with a pair of Copa Mundials.
We can only guess it’s a comfort thing, but it’s worth keeping an eye on when England play Malta.
After all, there won’t be too much else going on.
