FIFA 17: The Journey’s Alex Hunter ISN’T based on Marcus Rashford – revealed

FIFA 17’s The Journey hero Alex Hunter is not based on Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, Dream Team can reveal.

EA Sports’ latest edition of the game features for the first time a cinematic-narrative-mode in the form of The Journey, in which you play as Alex Hunter, an up-and-coming youngster in the footballing world.

But while rumours abound that the game’s makers had based their storyline around the Red Devils youngster’s remarkable rise to stardom, we can reveal that Hunter’s story was written well before Rashford broke onto the scene.

Speaking at EA Sports’ FIFA 17 review day in Vancouver, producer Mat Prior told Dream Team: “Alex Hunter’s not really based on anyone per se. People might think we wrote the Marcus Rashford story – but this has been in production for a number of years before that so it is just a case of life imitating art.

“Back when we started this we didn’t know who Marcus Rashford was and obviously he broke through and almost emulated the story we’re telling in the game – which is testament to the authenticity of the game which is great to see.

“We wanted to create a brand new character and one that was indiciative of the real world of football. We wanted someone that represents that – through writing the character and representing the character we came out with Alex Hunter.”

The Journey sees you playing as Hunter from the first trial at a professional club onwards, with ups and downs on the way as relationships with managers and friends can occasionally become fractious.

As the player behind Hunter, you can choose how he reacts in certain situations and control everything from what you say in post-match interviews to which club you sign for.

And Prior said the parallels to real life are testament to the strength of the storyline behind the game.

He added: “Back when we started this we didn’t know who Marcus Rashford was and obviously he broke through and almost emulated the story we’re telling in the game – which is testament to the authenticity of the game which is great to see.

“People might think we wrote the Marcus Rashford story – but this has been in production for a number of years before that so it is just a case of life imitating art.

“Even more so that ultimately I went to meet Rashford as a result of this. We identified a number of youngsters that we wanted to speak to to show them scenes and explain the story to and he completely connected with it.

“It was very strange in that he basically just came through at the same time that the Journey was being made.”
