Everyone missed the unbelievable save that cost England a World Cup final place

At first glance it looked as though Harry Kane had hit the post

Nobody spotted this at the time.

England dominated proceedings in the first half of their World Cup semi-final against Croatia. It was all looking so promising.

The frustration with the end result – a Croatia win, comes as Gareth Southgate’s men had ample opportunities to be leading by at least three goals at half-time.

The most notable of those England chances came when Harry Kane rounded Croatia’s goalkeeper Danijel Subasic and looked certain to tap into the vacant net.

The Spurs man struck the post however and the glorious chance went begging.

He did hit the post, right?

One eagle-eyed fan spotted on the replay that Subasic actually pulled off the save of the tournament to deny Kane.

Don’t believe me? Here’s the proof…

I now question everything I once believed.

We’ve all been berating Kane for missing the opportunity, when we should be recognising the gravity-defying antics of Subasic.

The Monaco keeper has had an excellent tournament so far, with that moment surely the pinnacle.

The save was shrouded in confusion at the time as the linesman actually flagged for an offence.

Nobody was sure whether the flag went up for offside or the ball going out of play – both would have been wrong decisions.

Had a goal been scored however, then surely VAR would have overturned the decision of the trigger-happy linesman.

Despite the miss, Kane is still in the driving seat to get his hands on the Golden Boot at the end of the tournament.

The England captain currently leads his closest rivals Romelu Lukaku and Kylian Mbappe in the scoring charts.

Please just give us something to celebrate.

John Stones also squandered a glorious chance in extra-time, just moments before Mario Mandzukic’s dramatic winner.

The Man City man saw his header cleared off the line to deny him from being the hero on the night.

It’s all these fine margins that make the result such a bitter pill to swallow.
