Kosovo has long been a disputed region but it was finally recognised by FIFA and UEFA in May 2016, which ruffled feathers in Serbia.

Now Xherdan Shaqiri could be about to pour petrol all over the delicate situation.

To give some background on why tensions are so high, Serbia do not recognise Kosovo as an independent state and they feel very strongly about it.

With Kosovo previously unrepresented as a football nation, many of their players pledged their allegiances to Switzerland.

Those include; Granit Xhaka, Valon Behrami and of course Shaqiri.

Shaqiri and Xhaka have both hinted that they wanted to switch nations to represent Kosovo but FIFA refused any applications.

Now, Shaqiri is showing his allegiance to his Kosovar heritage on the pitch.

He is expected to wear the Nike Mercurials with the Swiss flag on the left boot and the Kosovan flag on the right boot.

An act seen as direct provocation in Serbian quarters.

Do not be surprised to see some heavy tackles going in from both players in what could be a very tense match.

Serbia’s Aleksandr Mitrovic has already laid down the gauntlet for Shaqiri.

“If he loves Kosovo so much and decides to flaunt the flag, why did he refuse the chance to play for their team?,” He asked after seeing Shaqiri’s boot of choice.

The game was already due to be a spicy encounter with the Kosovar players in Switzerland’s team and Serbia’s passionate support in the stands.

But now Shaqiri has rocked the boat we are expecting fireworks in this one.

Frankly, looking at the Serbia team full of big, powerful b******* they are the last people I would want to p*** off before playing.

Good luck Xherdan, but you got yourself into this one.

Let’s just hope it doesn’t boil over.
