Ryan Brown - Charlton fan, Dream Team expert and 2011-12 Champion, is the second person to contribute to our ‘How to win Dream Team’.
We’re not saying that if you follow these suggestions religiously that you’ll be the next person to hold that unnecessarily oversized cheque, but it can’t hurt to inhale the wisdom of a former winner.
1. Team Captains play more games
Try and pick as many club captains in your side, as when fit, they are likely to play all/the majority of games for their club.
Best looking captain options for this season:
Ron Vlaar - £2m. 12/13 Points - 37
Phil Jagielka - £4.5m. 12/13 Points - 129
John Terry - £5m. 12/13 Points - 116
Brede Hangeland - £2m. 12/13 Points - 51
Steven Gerrard - £5m. 12/13 Points - 176
Vincent Kompany - £6.5m. 12/13 Points - 118
Ryan Shawcross - £4m. 12/13 Points - 135
Ashley Williams - £3.5m. 12/13 Points - 129
Kevin Nolan - £3.5m. 12/13 Points - 129
2. Mini League's help
Creating or entering a Mini League between friends helps because when faced with some decent competition, and with bragging rights at stake, you’re less likely to lose interest and miss those all-important transfer windows.
3. Don’t listen to your Dad’s advice
It’s physically impossible to look at someone’s fantasy football team and say ‘yeah that’s perfect, I wouldn’t change anything’.
Everyone’s got an opinion or a suggestion but you’ve got to trust your instinct, rather than your Dad who always seems to think N’Zogbia is about to have the season of his life.
4. Don’t necessarily use all your transfers
With only 12 transfers across the whole season it can be tempting to use them all every window, but if things are going fine then it’s probably best to stick by the players that have done the business for you up to that point.
5. Be really lucky
These might get you into the top 10,000 but you still need an extreme amount of luck. In the season I won Dempsey scored two hat-tricks in the space of a month playing for Fulham.,
There was also a stage where everyone in the top 10 had Ivanovic apart from me, and he was on fire that season (123 points), however two months before the end of the season he got a long ban for punching Maloney. He also missed the Champions League final because he got booked for kicking the penalty spot before Messi’s penalty in the semi. Without those I would have struggled to get in the top 5.
My best move came from picking Suarez in the last transfer window, Liverpool were on their worst run in 70 odd years but Suarez was still scoring. Eight out of the top ten teams choose Adebayor as Tottenham had the easiest run in and the most games left at the end of the season but I went with Suarez and a couple of weeks later Suarez scored a great hat-trick against Norwich and fired me top with only a month left.
