Wayne Rooney HASN’T actually beaten Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring record

Edward Bearryman

The Wayne Rooney record was attracting a lot of headlines this weekend.

You know, the one in which he eclipsed Bobby Charlton’s all-time goals tally for Man United.

Except that, actually, he, you know, really didn’t.

According to the record books, Bobby Charlton’s total isn’t 249, the number Rooney eclipsed against Stoke.

It’s 251.

Let’s rewind to April 1973, the month Sir Bobby combed over in the Old Trafford dressing room for the last ever time.

You see, there’s some conjecture as to what constitutes his last ever game for the club.

United say his career finished say it finished at the culmination of the 1972-3 English league season, when the Red Devils lost their last game of the season 1-0 away to Chelsea.

UEFA, however, disagree.

They say his last game for United came, a week later, in an Anglo-Italian Cup fixture against Verona.

In which, of course, Bobby scored a brace.

Thereby taking his total tally of goals at Old Trafford to 251.

Man United refuse to recognise this as a ‘first-class game competition’ but it was an official match organised between the FA, the Italian FA and UEFA.

So who runs football?

Man United or UEFA?

If you know, you know.

Unlucky Wayne. Two more to go to beat the record.
