DANCING on Ice star Vanilla Ice splashed out £30,000 for a vintage Jaguar in
an eBay auction — so he could drive it in the UK.
The US rapper, 43, snapped up the 1960 Mark II model — like Inspector Morse’s
— when he arrived in London.
He bought it to provide transport for him to the ITV1 show’s studios.
Pals say the Ice Ice Baby star — real name Robert Van Winkle — is addicted to
eBay and spends all his free time looking for bargains and cars to add to
A show insider said: “Vanilla Ice absolutely loves eBay. When he got to the
studio the first thing he did was ask if there was a wi-fi connection so he
could get on to the website.
“He likes to be able to check eBay all the time. He is always on there when
there is a break in training.
“Last week a vintage Jaguar turned up on the studio lot and everyone wondered
what was going on. It turned out he had bought it to use while he was in UK.
“He loves cars and uses eBay to buy retro vehicles back home in the US,
especially Cadillacs. We are all expecting him to buy a car EVERY
week and there is plenty of room out the front of the Dancing on Ice studio
for him to park them.”
Vanilla Ice’s love of motors came from his stepfather, who was a car salesman.
The rapper has also invested in a “car loft” in which owners rent space to
store their classic vehicles.
Pals says he loves to “pimp” his vehicles by adding accessories.
Insiders at Dancing on Ice, where he is partnered by Katie Stainsby, wonder if
he will do the same to his new Jag.
A source said: “He has been telling anyone who will listen about how much he
loves cars, and says he likes to pimp them up back home. Now everyone is
waiting to see whether he will do the same to the Jag. He loves a bargain
and eBay is perfect for it.”
Despite his bad boy image, Vanilla has been a hit with production staff and
locals in Streatham, South London, where he has been training at the local
He came second in the first episode of the show and last night joined the
other celebs in a group dance.
The source said: “Everyone loves Vanilla Ice. He is so well-mannered and
friendly behind the scenes.
“In the first week when he was competing on the show, he was the most popular
among the studio audience who were all asking for photos and autographs
during the breaks — which he was happy to do.”
Locals in Streatham have also been singing his praises.
Metin Ahmet, owner of a restaurant where Vanilla eats, said: “He’s a really
nice guy. He is very polite and friendly to the staff.”
Vanilla Ice is the fourth favourite to win Dancing on Ice at 8-1, according to
bookmaker Paddy Power.
He is behind former EastEnders actor Sam Attwater, who is 13-8, kids’ TV
presenter Laura Hamilton at 4-1 and reality star Kerry Katona on 7-1.
But the rapper thought his days on the show were numbered during his opening
routine — when what was thought to be blood was spotted on his costume. He
was rushed to the medical room — only to find out the stain was JAM
from a doughnut.
