GUTS and character dragged Monaghan through last time out against Cavan.

But they do not want to have to dig themselves out of a hole again tomorrow.

Malachy O’Rourke’s side came from four points down in their first round Ulster
SFC tie with the Breffni Blues. They showed all their experience to salvage
a win.

It was relief and smiles all round as they left Kingspan Breffni Park, but
they do not want another stressful day when they go back there to face

Farney selector Finbar Fitzpatrick admitted: “We were under pressure against
Cavan and got away with it. We were very disappointed with our performance.

“Yes, we showed a lot of heart and spirit to rescue the situation but we don’t
want to have to dig deep like that again. Hopefully we have learned our
lesson because a similar performance won’t be good enough. The first round
is always about just getting through it, but for significant chunks of it,
we were really below par.”

Fit-again Colin Walshe could come in as a direct swap for the injured Drew
Wylie against Fermanagh. Owen Lennon is poised to return and Dick Clerkin
continues to roll back the years.

Ace defender Dessie Mone explained: “That is something you work towards,
building a strong panel like that.”
