Bournemouth’s Adam Smith has been linked with a return to White Hart Lane this summer after three impressive years with the Cherries.

We asked our friends at Football Whispers to run the rule over the former England Under-21 international.

Who is Adam Smith and where does he come from?

Smith is a name which will be familiar the coaching staff at White Hart Lane given he only left the north London club for good in 2014.

The 26-year-old right-back was on Tottenham’s books as a professional from 2007 but made just one substitute appearance in the Premier League, in a 2-0 win against Fulham in May 2012.

His only start came in a 3-0 win over Carlisle United in the League Cup in September of the same year.

With Walker and Kyle Naughton ahead of him in the pecking order it was clear Smith’s first-team chances were limited.

After turning pro in 2009, Smith moved out on loan to Wycombe Wanderers, then in League One, before finishing the 2009/10 campaign with League Two’s Torquay United.

Smith also took in loans with Bournemouth, MK Dons, Leeds United, Millwall and Derby County in the next three season before leaving Spurs for good to join Bournemouth.

He has made the right-back spot his own since and helped the Cherries into the Premier League before making 25 top-flight starts last season.

This term Smith has played all but two of Bournemouth’s league fixtures with Simon Francis, his usual rival for the number two shirt, moving inside to centre-back.

He is a good tackler but good on the ball too – as all players in Howe’s possession-heavy side must be.

Smith gets forward well to support attacks and his dribbling and crossing are strengths of his game – highlighted by the fact he, along with Junior Stanislas, leads the way for assists at Bournemouth this term with five.

On top of that, Smith also supplies more key passes (0.9) and has more shots (0.8) per game than any other defender at the Vitality Stadium.

He is every inch the modern full-back and, like Bournemouth, Pochettino’s Spurs side attack with plenty of width from the full-back areas.

How much will he cost?

At 26-years-old Smith is in his prime and an integral part of the Bournemouth side that has taken to the Premier League with such ease since winning promotion in 2015.

The fact he is an English player makes him something of a commodity in the Premier League as clubs must include eight homegrown players in their 25-man squads.

That alone should be enough to ensure the Leytonstone-born defender would command a fee upwards of £20million.

Where is his most likely destination this summer?

Tottenham would be a good fit for Smith.

He would have little difficulty slotting into Pochettino’s style of play, given it is not vastly different from Eddie Howe’s, and he certainly fits the profile for Tottenham transfer targets.

The big question mark – assuming Walker does leave White Hart Lane – is whether he offers a significant upgrade on Kieran Trippier who has caught the eye in Walker’s absence.

The former Burnley and Manchester City defender has waited patiently for his opportunity and there is not much between him and Smith with both men providing good attacking outlets.

If Spurs are intent on making up the gap to Premier League champions Chelsea next season then a higher calibre of player – preferably one with European experience – might be necessary.
