A group of men can be heard sniggering as they film what is about to happen.
Then, the aggressor — speaking in a Seville, which is where Betis are from – emerges and walks towards the seated man, and shouts: “You, Gabilondo.” — which is a likely reference to former Athletic Bilbao midfielder, Igor Gabilondo.
Before adding: “Up the Spanish!” and proceeds to throw a drink in the man’s face and slapping him.
Shocked, the local man stands up and tries to turn away and get away between the chairs and tables.
He is quickly crowded out and the Betis yob starts kicking and punching at the man and tables and chairs alike.
Onlookers are visibly shocked to see this occurrence in what is usually a plaza full of tourists.
The attack is not just notable for the football side, but there is also a political undertone due to the historical battle for independence by the Basque Country from Spanish rule.
It is the latest in a long line of unsavoury incidents among football fans in Spain at all levels of the game, and is sure to be investigated by the authorities.
Athletic Bilbao won the match 2-1 and move ahead of their Basque rivals, Real Sociedad.
