Football Whispers gives you the backstory to the prolific striker and why we would be a perfect signing for Liverpool or Spurs

TIMO WERNER is thought to be on Liverpool’s transfer wish list, with the Reds having scouted the forward for the past year.

And Tottenham are also thought to be interested in the RB Leipzig and Germany star.

Football Whispers gives us the lowdown on the 21-year-old and why is one of the hottest prospects in Europe.

Werner came through the ranks at local club VfB Stuttgart after joining aged six, making his debut in 2013 aged just 17 – the youngest to play for his boyhood club..

He also became the youngest player in Bundesliga history to score two goals in a game after grabbing a brace in their 3-1 win over Freiburg in November 2013.

Werner scored 14 goals in 103 games in all competitions and many expected this season to be the one where he cemented his status as a hometown hero, helping Stuttgart in their promotion push after suffering relegation from the Bundesliga.

But then he was offered the chance to move to RB Leipzig for £8million last summer.

He said: “I am VfB through and through but I hope the fans will understand that I want to take this opportunity [at Leipzig]; I have to think about my career.”

And away from his boyhood club he’s been thriving and has adapted to a more central role as one of the strikers in a. 4-2-2-2 system.

In fact, he’s scored more league goals for Leipzig in 25 matches than he did for Stuttgart in three full seasons, grabbing his 17th of the season against Schalke on Sunday.

He’s currently fourth in terms of top scorers in the Bundesliga this season – only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Robert Lewandowski and Anthony Modeste have more.

Indeed, no other under-21 player in Europe’s top five leagues has more goals than Werner.

It’s probably no surprise that Werner is a Liverpool transfer target given that he is a German excelling in Jurgen Klopp’s former league.

But it’s not a lazy link, with the 21-year-old fitting the profile of what Klopp looks for in a player – and what’s more, he also fits the profile of what owners Fenway Sports Group want from an investment.

FSG want to recruit hot prospects with an abundance of potential who are good enough to have an impact now, but who don’t break the bank – the stars of tomorrow.

And it looks like Klopp is after attackers who can operate in a number of areas of the pitch, who have face and a goal threat.

And the fact that Werner played regularly out wide for Stuttgart has had a positive influence on him.

He was initially tipped to be the next Marco Reus but under Ralph Hasenhuttl his game has been refined.

He has been deployed as a striker this season but he’s forever popping up in wide areas, working the channels and isolating defenders in areas they aren’t comfortable in before just bursting past them.

Werner is pretty prolific too, with a goal every 129 minutes in the league so far this season, and a hugely impressive 62 per cent shot accuracy – by contrast Lewandowski’s shot accuracy is just 49 per cent.

If you compare that to Liverpool’s current options, it’s better than Divock Origi’s 47 per cent, but worse than Roberto Firmino’s 64 per cent and Daniel Sturridge’s 67 per cent.

And Werner has definitely considered a move to the Reds.

He told Bild: “If you were to play at Anfield and hear the fans sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone,’ it would certainly be something special.”

With his club currently second in the Bundesliga in their first season in the German top flight, they’re definitely growing quickly, almost as fast as the pacy forward can run!
