Barcelona will have to pay a whopping £170MILLION to sign Antoine Griezmann in this window.
With Neymar nearing a world record-obliterating £196m switch to Paris Saint-Germain, the Catalans are reported to have made the Frenchman their No.1 choice as a replacement.
However, in order to secure his signature, they will have to pay Atletico Madrid the mammoth release clause the striker has until September 1.
Once the summer transfer window concludes, Griezmann’s buy-out fee will return to the relatively more modest £85m.
The 26-year-old signed a new contract with the Rojiblancos despite strong interest from Manchester United after it was confirmed Fifa would uphold a transfer ban against the club.
As they aren’t allowed to sign anyone until January, Griezmann showed loyalty by rejecting the chance to move and extending his contract.
To ensure he would stay with the club until at least the end of their transfer ban, his release clause was temporarily doubled.
Barcelona are expecting to lose Neymar to PSG before the summer window slams shut and had earmarked Griezmann as the ideal replacement.
However, despite bringing in enough cash to meet the Frenchman’s current buy-out clause with the world record sale, it is unlikely they will spend so much on a player they can get for half the price in six months’ time.
Griezmann got fans scratching their heads last night as he tweeted a picture of himself with just an ellipsis as the caption.
Philippe Coutinho, Paulo Dybala, Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe are among other Barcelona candidates to replace Neymar.
While the Catalans could also make PSG’s Angel Di Maria part of the deal for the Brazilian.
