Roy Keane sums up what is wrong with Arsenal in one perfect sentence

It’s the morning after the night before.

Once again Arsenal’s Champions League hopes lay in tatters; their hopes of European glory savaged by a ruthless Bayern Munich team.

It’s an annual tradition.

Over the next few days there will be a lot of talking.

But Roy Keane managed to neatly sum up what is wrong with Arsenal in the space of one offhand remark.

Speaking as a pundit on ITV the former Man United midfielder said: “When I see [Kieran] Gibbs with the armband on at the end of the game, you’re in trouble.”

And that’s it, isn’t it?

For all of Arsenal’s flair and luxury there is a distinct lack of bite, a lack of leadership.

No disrespect to Gibbs of course, but if your 27-year-old second choice left-back ends up with the captain’s armband away at Bayern in the Champions League, when you need a leader most, then something has indeed gone wrong.

Many will say it’s time for Arsene Wenger to finally step down.

After all, they say the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Isn’t that exactly what has been happening to Arsenal for a few years now?

There isn’t much any manager in the world can tell Wenger about attractive football, about building a philosophy that defines a club.

Unfortunately, fans have grown tired of the definition.

They want titles, proper titles; the Premier League and a Champions League campaign that doesn’t end with the sense of inevitable futility.

What now? Only the man himself knows…
