It’s always the ones you least expect.
Kylian Mbappe and Marco Reus are two of the most breathtaking players in world football.
Usually you associate them with pure, unadulterated pace and brilliance, leading the lines for PSG and Borussia Dortmund respectively.
But on Saturday we saw a different side to them.
In an absolutely seismic Revierderby which had huge ramifications for the Bundesliga title race, Reus completely lost his head as Schalke prevailed 4-2.
Dortmund were looking to keep up the pressure on Bayern Munich but, when their captain saw red for a horrific lunge on Suat Serder on the hour mark, they fell apart.
It was only Reus’ second career red card and has left their title hopes in tatters.
And he wasn’t the only to lose his head in a high pressure situation.
PSG’s tendency to ‘bottle’ big moments is becoming alarming and they showed their frailties again in the Coupe de France final on Saturday night.
Despite going 2-0 up against Rennes, they sacrificed their lead and eventually succumbed in dramatic circumstances on penalties.
And Mbappe’s loss of composure in extra time will be seen as a turning point.
The French sensation inexplicably lunged at Damien Da Silva, catching the Rennes defender high on the knee.
One of the most blatant red cards you’ll ever see… from such an unlikely source.
Talk about letting their sides down…
