If it first you don’t succeed, try and try again.
Philippe Coutinho has mastered the art of the inverse Arjen Robben in recent years, cutting in from the left and arcing shots into the far corner.
That became his signature move during his Liverpool days and the Brazilian has continued it at Barcelona.
But in a meeting between the Reds and arch rivals Man United at Anfield in October 2016, David De Gea denied Coutinho miraculously:
Coutinho found half a yard before bending a shot that looked goal bound the moment it left his boot.
But De Gea had other ideas, somehow clawing away to produce one of the saves of that season.
The little Brazilian was not to be denied nearly three years on tonight, though.
With Barca outplaying United and a Champions League semi-final berth within their grasp, the visitors awarded Coutinho too much space 25 yards out.
He didn’t hesitate, arcing a wonderful shot that gave the despairing De Gea no chance this time to add gloss to the scoreline.
As an ex-Liverpool man, that will have tasted extra sweet…
