We asked a 14-year-old what he thinks about the best players in world football

From Lionel Messi to Gareth Southgate's England side, what do Generation Z think of the biggest stars in history?

It’s easy to forget for some of us that new football fans emerge every year.

But who do the younger generation think are the best players in football history, and what’s it like for them supporting an England side who are now enjoying more success than they’ve had in the past 20 years?

We asked 14-year-old Ollie Robinson what he thinks about everything from the Messi/Ronaldo debate to whether Pele is rated by teenagers these days.

What is your first World Cup memory?

My first memory was probably the 2010 final with Spain and Netherlands with the Jabulani ball.
What is your favourite World Cup memory?
Probably the Kieran Trippier free kick against Croatia last summer.

Who was your first World Cup hero?
Wayne Rooney in 2014 because how he was the main man in the England squad then.
Who did you pretend to be on the playground?
When I was younger I used to pretend to be Messi because I preferred him to Ronaldo.
Do you support a club? If so, what is your first memory of the club?
I support Tottenham, and my first memory of the club was when I was five. I went to watch them play Arsenal in which we beat them 2-1 and Danny Rose scored a volley.

Who do you think is the best ever football player and why?

In my opinion I think that Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world.

He’s worked very hard to get into the position he is in now – for example, his teammates at Real Madrid and Man United always said he was the first one at training in the morning and the last one there practising after training as well.

Who do you think is the second best ever football player and why?

I think Lionel Messi is the second best player ever. He is so technically gifted at everything he does on the pitch.

He has also worked hard to get where he is, but not as hard as Cristiano Ronaldo.

Do you know who Pele is?

I have heard about Pele and how good he was in his time. I have seen a few videos of him playing, and the defenders look quite bad.

He was no doubt very good in his day, but I’m just not very sure how good he would be in modern day football, where everybody is generally better.

Do you know who Diego Maradona is, and do you rate him?

Diego Maradona was a very good player because of his skill and how technical he was. So yeah, I do rate him.

What do you think of Ronaldinho?

Ronaldinho was one of the best ever players to play the game in my opinion, because of his skills and how he thinks.

What do people your age call the ‘original’ Ronaldo?

R9, or fat Ronaldo.

What do you think of R9?

R9 was one of the best ever football players ever because of his goal scoring talent and his movement to get into spaces to score.

However he was very injury prone because his knees weren’t very developed.

Who are the best players you watch on YouTube?

I think the best players to watch on YouTube are Messi because of his talent, Ronaldinho because of his skill, and R9 and Cristiano because of their goal scoring talent.

Who is the best player currently playing in the Premier League?

I think the best player in the Premier League is Harry Kane because of his goalscoring talent or Kevin De Bruyne because of his vision and passing accuracy.

What do you think of the England football team?

In my opinion I think that the current England team is the best I’ve seen in my lifetime because we have quick wingers in Sancho, Sterling and Rashford. We’ve got a talented striker in Kane, and good midfielders in Rice, Alli, Henderson and Lingard.

What’s it been like supporting England in your lifetime?

It’s been a struggle supporting England for my whole lifetime because we have good players but we just can’t play well sometimes as a team.
