Alisson and Virgil van Dijk inexplicably combine to nearly derail Liverpool’s title challenge

You just don't expect this from these two

People can shock you sometimes.

All season Virgil van Dijk has been impersonating a brick wall at the back for Liverpool as they boast the best defensive record in the league.

Alisson has had a couple of dodgy moments but on the whole he has combined with the Dutchman to great effect at the back this term.

Unfortunately against Fulham they combined in a comedy of errors to hand their opponents a completely unwarranted lifeline.

Let’s just say they will both be buying James Milner as many cartons of Ribena as he wants tonight.

Sadio Mane had opened the scoring with his 11th goal in 11 games and the Reds had dominated Fulham for the majority of the game without being able to snatch the all-important second.

Not to worry for Fulham as the usually infallible pair of Van Dijk and Alisson were about to conjure up something special.

Milner sliced a clearance towards his own goal which was dropping into no man’s land between centre-back and keeper.

However with Van Dijk as usual possessing the coolest head on the pitch he calmly turned around waiting for Alisson to come and collect it.

To his surprise Alisson was nowhere to be seen, cue panic stations.

Van Dijk did his best to head it into the Brazilians arms but all he could do was nod back a real hospital pass which bounced in front of the keeper.

Alisson didn’t cover himself in glory with his challenge on Babel and the ball bounced through for the Fulham striker to tap home into an empty net.

With the goal making the score 1-1 it was a potential hammer blow to Liverpool’s title hopes.

It would have been two points dropped and an opportunity to overtake Man City at the top of the table over the international break blown.

The tension on the pitch and among the fans was palpable.

However a few minutes later Milner was on hand to save their blushes with a well-taken penalty to restore the advantage and wrap up all three points.
