Should goals against Fulham count half?
The Cottagers have conceded a full 10 more goals than anyone else in the league.
But make no mistake Sadio Mane’s 11th goal in 11 games proved why he should be recognised as the best striker in the league this season.
Mane gracefully combined with Roberto Firmino in Fulham’s box to tap home the game’s opening goal.
The defence which has underpinned Liverpool’s title challenge this season with Virgil van Dijk is being credited as possibly the most influential player ever – step aside N’Golo Kante.
They have conceded the fewest goals of any team and when the attack hasn’t been firing the backline has been key.
And one man has surpassed all expectations up front.
Last season’s run to the Champions League final was all about Mo Salah and the Egyptian was the second top scorer in the league before today.
However, now we are seeing what Mane is truly capable of.
His tap-in took his league tally to 17 this season, level with Salah and just one strike behind Sergio Aguero.
The Senegalese flyer should be recognised as the best striker in the Premier League this season for one integral reason.
He doesn’t take penalties and all the other Golden Boot contenders do.
Aguero currently leads the Golden Boot race with 18 goals, two of which have come from the spot against Chelsea and West Ham.
Salah, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane are currently on 17 goals but if you take away their spot kicks, (3, 3, 4 respectively) then Mane would be one goal clear at the top of the charts.
Yes, it is moving the goalposts somewhate but if Mane keeps pace with the rest of the contenders until the end of the season despite not being on penalty duties then that will be a brilliant achievement.
In my eyes at least he will have been the best goalscorer in the league.
