When it rains it pours at Chelsea.
The Blues have been slapped with a transfer ban for two windows after breaching rules for the registration of players under 18.
The groundbreaking news comes just as unrest at the club reaches its highest point during Maurizio Sarri’s reign.
Sarri has reportedly been given a week to save his job, with the Carabao Cup final against Man City on Sunday and the Premier League showdown with Spurs next Wednesday ultimately pivotal.
But any hopes of improving the squad this summer and next January have been dashed by FIFA.
The announcement says: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned the English club Chelsea FC and The Football Association for breaches relating to the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18.
“This ban applies to the club as a whole – with the exception of the women’s and futsal teams – and does not prevent the release of players.”
It leaves question marks over the futures of Gonzalo Higuain and Alvaro Morata, with both on loan at Chelsea and Atletico Madrid respectively.
Christian Pulisic’s deal was completed before the ban so he will still join from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, but what will this mean for Real Madrid’s main priority Eden Hazard?
Hazard has just one year left on his current deal and Chelsea certainly won’t want to lose him for nothing next summer.
It all makes this curious tweet yesterday look even stranger:
