It wouldn’t be a Madrid derby without some drama.
Real Madrid can count themselves lucky to have been awarded the penalty from which they took a 2-1 lead against their rivals Atletico Madrid.
Sergio Ramos blasted home the first-half spot-kick after Real benefited from a huge slice of luck to get the decision.
Atletico’s Jose Gimenez was adjudged by the referee to have fouled Vinicius Junior inside the box with the incident being referred to VAR.
Diego Simeone waited with bated breath as the higher powers pontificated on the original decision made.
To the Argentinian’s beausement the referee’s decision stood.
Ramos decided to finesse the penalty past Jan Oblak instead of his usual panenka party trick.
The Spaniard’s goal gave Real a 2-1 lead after Antoine Griezmann had cancelled out Casemiro’s spectacular overhead kick.
Gareth Bale then made it 3-1 with ten minutes to play as Santiago Solari’s side look set to seal all three points at the home of their rivals.
Even with endless replays and unlimited angles, VAR still can’t guarantee the correct decision is made.
