Barcelona versus Real Madrid is the pinnacle of football, isn’t it?
However, as tonight’s clash is merely the first-leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final, we’re not exactly seeing each team at their best.
For one thing, Barca left Lionel Messi on the bench and opted for Malcom in their attack instead.
And in the 12th minute, with the score at 1-0 to Madrid, we saw a breakaway that didn’t exactly remind us we were watching El Clasico.
It all started with Ivan Rakitic losing the ball in the midfield to the lively Vinicius Junior.
The young Brazilian then charged forward, with Toni Kroos to his left and Karim Benzema practically grappling for the ball to his right.
In fact, at one point, it looked as if Vinicius and Benzema were going to trip over one another.
What’s worse is that the eager duo both completely ignore the unmarked Kroos to their left.
In the end, Vinicius decided to go it alone and took a careless shot, which was easily charged down by Gerard Pique and cleared to safety.
How this didn’t end up with Madrid going two up, we’ll never know.
Credit belongs to Pique for blocking the shot in this three-against-one situation, but why on earth was Benzema trying to take the ball from the youngster?
Either way, it was a pretty dumb move all round.
