Footballers have this drilled into them from the moment they start playing competitively.
Always play to the whistle.
Yet somehow, one of the best drilled teams in the Premier League completely forgot they were playing in a football match today.
When you are playing Man City at the Etihad it is hard enough without pretty much gifting them free goals.
Sean Dyche will have told his Burnley players to keep their shape and maintain concentration and they might be able to leave Manchester with a precious point.
Despite Sergio Aguero scoring in the first half and missing an open goal, Burnley were clinging to the game and everything was in order as the second half began.
And then catastrophe struck.
In completely uncharacteristic scenes, the whole Burnley defence stopped what they were doing and looked at the referee for a decision.
David Silva dragged the ball back from the byline to Leroy Sane bursting into the box, the German was pulled back and everyone in the stadium thought it was going to be given as a penalty and the ball would roll out of play.
… Only it didn’t quite pan out like that.
The referee stared blankly at all the players appealing and the ball slowed up to fall short of the line.
While the Burnley players stood still, Silva cunningly rescued the ball from going out and swept it back to his namesake Bernardo Silva to plow in a delicious volley.
It was a textbook example of why you should ALWAYS play to the whistle.
