Sometimes there’s nowhere to hide.
So when the world won’t swallow you up, why not try to blame someone else for your blatant mistake instead?
That appeared to be the approach made by Paul Pogba after he was caught napping at a Chelsea corner… and was made to pay.
Willian swung in an inviting cross which caught the Frenchman on his heels.
The man he was marking – Antonio Rudiger – wasn’t so sluggish, capitalising on Pogba’s dawdling to get away from him easily and power a header past David De Gea.
Pogba immediately fumed, but not at himself, as he should have done, but bizarrely with Victor Lindelof instead.
The midfielder appeared to blame Lindelof for blocking his run, when highlights showed the Swedish defender simply stood his ground whilst occupying his own marker David Luiz.
Pogba is undoubtedly United’s most important outfield player, but it’s moments like this that can be his undoing and provoke his critics into action.
From corners in particular he is susceptible, with a terrible handball gifting Liverpool a penalty a couple of seasons ago too.
Can he iron eventually iron out these mistakes?
