Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has been revealed as a secret donor who gave £63,000 to the family of a four-year-old boy for cancer treatment.
Dusan Todorovic is now in Barcelona where he is due to start treatment for a recurrence of neuroblastoma, a malignant adrenal gland tumour.
It is the same the same form of rare cancer that killed Sunderland fan Bradley Lowery.
There has been a huge campaign in Matic’s homeland of Serbia to help Dusan get treated and it has now emerged the United midfielder donated £63,000.
He had wished to remain anonymous but Dusan’s dad wanted to reveal just who had helped his son.
Matic is well known for helping out Vrelo, the local community of 1500 people where he was born.
According to locals, the footballer has continually paid off the tabs or debts at the local store and has donated money for repairs to the primary school which he attended.
The store attendant, Liljana Popovic, said: “The first thing that Nemanja does when he gets here is to visit the local store where he asks for the list of debts of the local people who only buy basic products, and he pays for everything, for everybody.”
The principle of the school Bosko Saric added: “Nemanja funded the playground for the children and says he will continue in summer.
“He plans to bring mobile baskets, goals, and balls, as well as sports equipment.”
The villagers also describe how the much-loved figure even settles the gambling debts of his peers and also finances the construction of the village’s drinking fountain in front of the local church.
