Why is Gary Neville being forced to wear a Xherdan Shaqiri shirt on Monday Night Football?

It seems the former Man United favourite lost a bet to his good pal Jamie Carragher

It’s all going wrong for Man United, isn’t it?

Jose Mourinho’s merry band of men are in the back pages for all of the wrong reasons at the moment; from rumoured player/manager fall outs to that dreadful defeat to Brighton at the weekend.

It can’t get any worse, can it?

Well, now United fans might have to face seeing their legendary old defender Gary Neville hosting tonight’s Monday Night Football while wearing a Liverpool shirt.

What has the world come to?

If you’re tuned into MNF this evening, you might just see the former right-back-turned-pundit sporting the red shirt of new Liverpool player Xherdan Shaqiri, after losing a bet to his co-host and former Reds defender Jamie Carragher.

Earlier this month, Carragher defeated Neville in a penalty shoot-out and claimed his good mate would have to wear the jersey of his most hated rival for the first show of the new season.

After netting the winning goal, Carragher said to Neville: “That’s a Liverpool shirt – I’ll even buy it.

“23 Carragher on the back. No, I’ll tell you who’ll we’ll get, 23 Shaqiri on the back, he hates Shaqiri.”

It gets worse for poor Nev, as it seems Carragher has asked Shaqiri to leave a message on the shirt for Neville.

The message reads: “To my No.1 fan Gary, please don’t track back – SORRY – please don’t backtrack on this bet.”

If you know your stuff, then you’ll know that Shaqiri’s words are a dig at Neville’s criticism of the Swiss international over the summer.

Back then, Neville said: “I’m not a fan of Shaqiri to be honest with you.

“I think that was to be fair made worse by the fact that he distanced himself from his team-mates as Stoke.

“They were unprofessional last season Stoke there’s no doubt and he epitomises it.”

So far on the show – which is showing Liverpool’s clash with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park – Neville is wearing his usual smart suit.

Let’s see if he does end up wearing the Shaqiri shirt.
