Why we shouldn’t have been surprised by Jorginho’s outrageous penalty technique

Chelsea's new signing has a history of being ice-cold from the spot

It was a highlight of the Premier League’s opening weekend.

We all knew that Chelsea’s Italian maestro Jorginho was an unbelieveably class act.

After all, Man City and Pep Guardiola were desperate to sign him from Napoli. Therefore he must be pretty good.

What we rather naively failed to notice about Jorginho’s game however is that he has an unbelievable track-record of tucking away penalties, and doing so in some style too.

We saw the 26-year-old convert from 12-yards in Chelsea’s opening game of the season at Huddersfield, in what was the coolest thing you saw all weekend.

The little hop in his run-up to the spot-kick had everyone drooling. We still can’t stop bloody watching it.

It’s not the first time that Jorginho has done this.

One eagled-eyed Reddit user has pointed out that the unusual, yet effective technique of Jorginho from the spot was actually a regular occurrence during his time with Napoli.

The video shows the midfielder converting three penalties during his time at Napoli, in which he uses the exact same technique that we saw against Huddersfield.

Only one of the spot-kicks is saved, with the keeper then unable to hold onto the ball before Jorginho fires in the rebound.

We firmly believe that these images should hang in a museum somewhere…

He’s been making goalkeepers look silly in Serie A for years and now has his sights set on doing the same to Premier League stoppers.

We can’t wait to see how the next goalkeeper to face Jorginho from 12-yards deals with his run-up.

Yet another intriguing subplot to look out for this season…
