The signing raised a few eyebrows at the time.
Stephan Lichtsteiner has impressed Arsenal fans with his complete performance for Switzerland against Costa Rica in their Group E clash.
The 34-year-old became Unai Emery’s first signing at Arsenal and Gunners’ fans have had the opportunity to watch their new man in action at the World Cup.
It’s safe to say they have been impressed, and rightly so.
Lichtsteiner has been one of Switzerland’s best players against Costa Rica in their final group game.
The marauding full-back has been involved in most of his side’s attacking play, as well as looking assured defensively.
Lichtsteiner played a part in the opening goal, when his lofted cross found the head of Breel Embolo who cushioned the ball down for Blerim Džemaili to score.
Arsenal’s new man picked up a yellow card for his troubles after a late challenge in the first-half. He will now miss Switzerland’s next match through suspension.
The former Juventus man was perhaps lucky to avoid seeing red after the studs-up tackle.
It will surprise nobody if Lichtsteiner does get sent off in the second half, but who cares?
Arsenal have lacked that ‘win at all costs’ attitude in recent years.
The Switzerland Captain is likely to be the understudy right-back to Bellerin at the Emirates next season.
Litchtsteiner could however work his way into Emery’s first-team plans if he keeps putting in performances like he has done against Costa Rica.
The full-back has whetted the appetites of Gunners’ fans ahead of next season…
