WEST HAM are considering making a move for Chris Smalling amid uncertainty over his future at Manchester United, according to reports.
United boss Jose Mourinho is keen on bringing in a new central defender, with Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld one of his main targets.
That may mean Smalling’s opportunities will be limited and, according to the Metro, West Ham are monitoring his situation at Old Trafford.
Mourinho’s options in central defence currently include Smalling, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, and Daley Blind.
The addition of Alderweireld, who is expected to cost around £55million, would see Mourinho needing to trim his squad.
New West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini is said to be interested in taking advantage of the potential situation at United.
The former Manchester City manager has reportedly been given a £70m budget to spend on transfers this summer.
Smalling, who is not in England’s World Cup squad, could be on his way to the London Stadium.
He has already brought in Ryan Fredericks from newly-promoted Fulham.
Swansea duo Alfie Mawson and Lukasz Fabianski are also said to be targets for Pellegrini.
