Look up ‘predictable’ in the dictionary and you’ll find a picture of Arjen Robben’s left foot.
You know exactly what we’re talking about.
He gets the ball on the right. His first move hints at taking it on the outside but Robben, the defender and everyone watching knows that won’t happen.
A game of poker begins and the defender is always the first to blink.
He shifts onto his left and bends the ball past the keeper as if playing a computer game. Simple, predictable and world class.

But there’s a new challenger for Robben’s crown.
He’s been quietly putting in the work and building a CV of copy and paste strikes.
We are, of course, talking about Philiipe Coutinho.
Coutinho’s winner in Andres Iniesta’s final game for Barcelona could only be described as vintage Coutinho.
For every door that was shut by a defender the Brazilian opened a new one. Then, having shifted and shimmied his way into a shooting position, he lent back and let off the firework.
The 25-year-old’s first league goal for Barcelona was a similar story.
Girona’s Pere Pons showed Coutinho down a dead end, only to find himself on a Brazilian carousel.
No sooner had the dizziness worn off than Coutinho was wheeling away celebrating.
His last goal for Liverpool? Yep, you guessed it, a rasping right-footed curler from the left.
But, aesthetically speaking, Coutinho will never be able to match Robben.
It’s an indisputable fact in football that left footers always look better on the ball.
Still, we’d watch Coutinho cutting in from the left before bothering the inside of the right post all day.
