Thierry Courtois denies the accusation and his son now says that they will file a criminal complaint.

Posting on Instagram, the Chelsea keeper said: “In the interview awarded by beIN SPORTS and taken over today in La Derniere Heure, Les Sports, Mr Marc Wilmots stated, among other things, ‘That is to say that a player has shut down the line-up’.

“‘That’s bad, French journalists told me that they had proof that it was Courtois’ father.’

“Mr M. Wilmots therefore repeats – not for the first time – publicly and gratuitously the accusations that constitute an assault on my honour and my reputation, as with my father.

“We have therefore jointly decided to file a criminal complaint with civil division of the party in respect of slander and defamation.”

Wilmots was sacked after the 3-1 defeat to Wales at Euro 2016, which led to a bust-up with Courtois over tactics.

Wilmots had blasted: “I just have a problem when I make my selection at 6pm and at 6.15pm it is on all social networks.
