How many of the other players to score 30+ Premier League goals in a season also won Player of the Year?

Mohamed Salah has become the eighth player in Premier League history to score 30+ goals in a season but what does that mean for his Player of the Year hopes?

Mohamed Salah is relentless.

The Champions League is very much Liverpool’s priority as the season draws to a close but that doesn’t mean the ‘Egyptian king’ will have mercy on the Reds’ Premier League opponents.

Salah scored his 30th league goals of the season against Bournemouth on Saturday and joined an exclusive club in the process.

The 25-year-old became the eighth player in Premier League history to score 30+ goals in a single campaign.

Harry Kane will push him all the way but Salah is very much favourite for the Golden Boot with four games to play.

The ex-Roma winger also has his eyes on other prestigious individual awards.

Most bookies believe the FWA Footballer of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year are two-horse races between Salah and Kevin De Bruyne.

What can we learn from the history books about the possible outcome of these awards?

Surely the only man who stands in Salah’s way?

Surely the only man who stands in Salah’s way?

We took a look back at the previous seven players to have scored 30+ league goals and whether or not they won one (or both) of the gongs.

RESULTS:

Alan Shearer 31 goals (1993/94) – FWA Footballer of the Year? YES – Players’ Player of the Year? NO

Andy Cole 34 goals (1993/94) – FWA Footballer of the Year? NO – Players’ Player of the Year? NO

Alan Shearer 34 goals (1994/95) – FWA Footballer of the Year? NO – Players’ Player of the Year? YES

Alan Shearer 31 goals (1995/96) – FWA Footballer of the Year? NO – Players’ Player of the Year? NO

Kevin Phillips 30 goals (1999/00) – FWA Footballer of the Year? NO – Players’ Player of the Year? NO

Thierry Henry 30 goals (2003/04) – FWA Footballer of the Year? YES – Players’ Player of the Year? YES

Cristiano Ronaldo 31 goals (2007/08) – FWA Footballer of the Year? YES – Players’ Player of the Year? YES

Robin van Persie 30 goals (2011/12) – FWA Footballer of the Year? YES – Players’ Player of the Year? YES

Luis Suarez 31 goals (2013/14) – FWA Footballer of the Year? YES – Players’ Player of the Year? YES

As you can see, the majority of the time, 30+ league goals results in at least one of the Player of the Year awards.

In the eight seasons at least one player has breached the 30 barrier, said player has won at least one of the awards on five occasions — Cole and Shearer both scored 30+ in 1993/94.

The good news for Salah is that since the Premier League became a 20-team league, a 30+ goalscorer has won both awards four times out of six.

And those four players are the most recent 30+ bandits — Henry, Ronaldo, Van Persie and Suarez.

This would suggest that Salah is the heavy favourite to pip De Bruyne to both awards.

However, the voting for Players’ Player of the Year takes place in late-February/early March.

That means Salah’s seven most recent goals were not taken into consideration when the players cast their votes.

This may favour De Bruyne, whose form was the subject of much praise in the first half of the season.
