When it comes to players who perpetually frustrate fans of Arsenal, no one stands out more than Shkodran Mustafi.
The tough-tackling German is supposed to be quite good – that’s what we keep hearing, anyway.
But time and time again, he struggles to get the bare basics of defending right, leaving supporters utterly bewildered.
And there was a perfect example in the Gunners game against Southampton this afternoon.
Playing at the Emirates, with Arsenal enjoying a five-game winning streak – in stark contrast to the Saints woeful, relegation-bound form of late – there was surely only one winner today, right?
Well, not if Mustafi has anything to say about it.
On the 17th minute, the Saints sniffed out an opportunity to attack Arsenal with a run down the right-wing from Cedric Soares, who crossed hopefully in the direction of Shane Long in the box.
And for some reason, Mustafi stood completely still to allow Long to nip in front of him and flick home the cross to score only his second goal in 48 matches.
It’s something Arsenal fans have come to expect from the German international, who cost them a pretty penny not too long ago.
Thankfully, the Gunners managed to comeback and score two goals before the half-time break, but Mustafi’s reputation among fans remains at an all-time low.
