The peculiar case of Gonzalo Higuain.
One of the most fearsome strikers in world football for the last decade, yes, but a perennial bottlejob?
To an extent, also yes.
Because Higuain certainly isn’t the man for the big occasion.
In more than one high-profile clash, including horribly in the 2014 World Cup final against Germany, Higuain has fluffed his lines when handed golden opportunities.
In fact, some Lionel Messi enthusiasts hold Higuain solely responsible for their man never winning an international trophy with Argentina.
And before the international break we saw the Argentine at his rattled, misfiring worst.
AC Milan’s clash was with runaway Serie A leaders Juventus was billed as the Higuain derby; a chance for the striker to get one over his previous employers.
What unfolded was perhaps the perfect microcosm of his career so far.
After winning a first-half penalty, Higuain controversially wrestled the ball off usually reliable Milan spotkick taker Franck Kessie.
He inevitably blew it, tamely dragging his weak shot which Wojciech Szczesny tipped onto the post.
The 30-year-old’s frustration was then palpable.
A chance to deliver a statement performance, Higuain instead produced a disasterclass.
Just minutes after watching Cristiano Ronaldo – his direct replacement at Juve – clinch the win, he lost all semblance of composure and received two swift bookings for dissent.
Higuain’s career portfolio is now littered with unforgettably forgettable moments.
We could be revering him for the greatest individual goalscoring season in Serie A history with Napoli in 2016.
Instead Higuain will be remembered for three gilt-edged misses and a blazed penalty over the bar in major international finals.
Will he ever get another opportunity to rise to the big occasion?
