Luke Shaw now more likely to start for England than Man United

FA announced Ryan Bertrand has been sidelined with the issue and will return to his club

The problem for Luke Shaw is the one man that doesn’t particularly rate him is his current manager.

Jose Mourinho’s harsh public tirade against the ex-Southampton defender has received criticism, with Ashley Young his preferred choice at left back.

But could Shaw now be on the verge of the England reckoning?

That’s after Ryan Bertrand was forced to withdraw from the England squad to face Holland and Italy due to an ankle problem.

The FA confirmed the Southampton full-back will return to his club following the unfortunate blow, despite him playing 90 minutes in the Saints’ 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Wigan on Sunday.

That means under-fire Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw could be in the frame to replace him in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Danny Rose and Ashley Young are already in the set-up for the two friendlies and Joe Gomez can also play full-back.

Bertrand’s problem is not thought to be serious and is a precaution after playing all of Saints’ recent games since coming back from a Christmas injury.

A Football Association statement read: “Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has returned to his club for further assessment on a back issue.

“Bertrand’s withdrawal is a precautionary measure and he will play no part in the forthcoming fixtures against the Netherlands and Italy.”
