But furious Alves, 34, said: “In my job it’s not painful to be eliminated because that’s part of day-to-day life, but to have to see and read stupid things like this…

“I will continue competing like I have done and leave the nonsense to stupid people.”

Ronaldo, 33, had kicked out at Brazilian Alves in the 15th minute but narrowly missed his former Barcelona rival.

But he and Real proved to be PSG’s bogey team as they triumphed 5-2 on aggregate in the Champions League last 16.

Ronaldo scored three of those goals, with his third coming in Paris on Tuesday.

The pair had a long-running feud in La Liga but upon leaving Barca for Juventus in 2016 Alves, 34, insisted he respected the Portuguese.

He said: “All my fights with Cristiano were because of the press.

“If people only knew how much I respect Cristiano Ronaldo. I will repeat it to make myself clear: I respect Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Everyone tells me what a fantastic professional he is. As for Ronaldo, it’s different, he was my rival and I had to compete with him.”

Meanwhile, Alves has apologised for his comments about the tragic death of Davide Astori – and taken a swipe at Mario Balotelli in the process.

The Italian striker criticised Alves, while fans branded him “an awful human being” online.

The PSG full-back, responding to Balotelli’s comments, tweeted: “I did not intend to offend anyone, I live in a world that we have to be hypocritical many times for people to like you.

“If someone felt offended, excuse me.”

Alves was asked about his reaction to finding out the Fiorentina captain was discovered dead in his sleep aged 31.

He replied: “We were not disturbed too much because we did not know him very much, I am sorry for his family.

“I think that Davide has done what he owed in this chaotic world and that now he is in a better world.

“But in the world every day thousands of children who do not receive much attention die of hunger and they are just as important.

“We all have to die sooner or later because we are passing through.

“Maybe we are sad, but certainly not like his family.”
