DOUBLE EDGED

Last year’s Bundesliga Team of the Season have had a very mixed time following the vote

From a crocked Manuel Neuer to Arsenal Fan TV's latest target, the 2016/17 Bundesliga Team of the Season haven't all gone on to better things

Can you name the last Bundesliga Team of the Season?

Don’t worry, we won’t make you. We can’t ever remember who’s in England’s World Cup group, let alone what happened in Germany last season.

But if you do a bit of research you’ll find a team that have had a very mixed time of it following their selection.

Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich)

A fractured foot suffered in training has kept Neuer out of action since September.

The 31-year-old has so far only played four games this season, keeping clean sheets in three of them, although he is eyeing a return soon.

In his absence Sven Ulreich dropped Bayern out of the Champions League in the saddest footballing moment of all time.

Right-back: Lukas Piszczek (Borussia Dortmund)

Piszczek has mostly escaped the curse of the Team of the Year.

The 32-year-old defender has been one of Dortmund’s most influential players, aside from a spell out with a ruptured knee ligament.

He’ll be a part of Poland’s 2018 World Cup plans, as long as he can stay fit and healthy for the remainder of the season.

Left-back: Sead Kolasinac (Schalke)

When Kolasinac rocked up at Arsenal he was an instant hit with fans thanks to his powerful rumblings down the left.

But, as tends to happens with Arsenal players, as the season has worn on he’s looked less and less effective.

Gary Neville seems to think it’s because he can’t move his feet. He obviously can, but who are we to argue with Gazza?

Centre-back: Niklas Sule (Hoffenheim)

Sule’s move from Hoffenheim to Bayern Munich puzzled many who cited the difficulties he’d have in breaking up the world-class defensive partnership between Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng.

When everyone is fit Boateng and Hummels remain Bayern’s first-choice, but Sule has still managed to clock up 30 appearances for club and country this season.

God bless squad rotation.

The German Jonathan Woodgate.

An absolute Rolls Royce of a player who looks unruffled by all he comes up against, including Tammy Abraham.

That’s what happens when you train against Robert Lewandowski every day.

Right winger: Ousmane Dembele (Borussia Dortmund)

Injuries have stopped Demebele from bedding in at Barcelona following his move from Dortmund.

Playing with Lionel Messi, and the standards he requires, has also been difficult for a player who thrives when doing stuff off the cuff.

He’s too good not to start enjoying himself soon though.

Left winger: Emil Forsberg (RB Leipzig)

Another whose season has been interrupted by injuries, including four days out for a cold. We’ve all been there.

His agent pushed hard for a move to Arsenal last summer but both must now be thanking their lucky stars that didn’t go through.

Now he’s fit again it’s full steam ahead to ensure he’s in peak condition for Sweden’s World Cup campaign.

Centre-mid: Thiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich)

Sorry if we sound like a broken record here, but injuries have… you get the idea.

Thiago’s made just 11 league starts for Bayern this season, depriving us all of his velvety soft first-touch.

The World Cup will be a worse place if he isn’t in Russia.

Centre-mid: Naby Keita (RB Leipzig)

So far, so good for Keita’s future move to Liverpool.

The 23-year-old has remained injury free for the most part, although he’s trying to get as much rest as possible by picking up red and yellow cards.

We bet he can’t wait to play with Jordan Henderson. Sorry, Champions League winner (in waiting) Jordan Henderson.

Striker: Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)

Bobby doesn’t deal in anything aside from goals.

Another 28 league goals for Bayern this season means he’s in the hunt for the European Golden Boot.

No change there then.

It’s so easy for him that he’s just sitting down now

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund)

A penny for his thoughts after swapping Dortmund for Arsenal.

He’s scored six times since arriving in north London but has only been on the winning side five times.

Still, at least he can tell the kids about the time he played with Alex Iwobi.
