Few players have ever been as popular as Paul Gascoigne.
And the Geordie legend has lived up to his reputation once again by giving Wayne Rooney £40… just like he did 18 years ago.
The pair were reunited at Everton’s training ground earlier this week and notorious prankster Gazza was never going to miss the chance to keep the pair’s long-running joke going.
The origins of the joke date back to 2000 when Gazza was coming to the end of his career.
Contracted to Everton, the England legend decided to check out a youth game that just so happened to feature future England top-scorer, Wayne Rooney.
After the game, Gazza entered the changing room to congratulate Rooney on his performance.
The promising 14-year-old cheekily told the legendary midfielder that he was ‘going out’ that night and so Gazza gave him £40 to spend on a good time.
Fast-forward 18 years and Rooney has earned enough money for a lifetime of good nights out.
Which just makes Gazza’s gesture even better.
What a hero.
