An 18-year-old Argentine is Major League Soccer’s most expensive signing

Much is expected of Atlanta United's Ezequiel Barco ahead of his debut season in Major League Soccer

Who are we talking about today?

Ezequiel Barco, arguably the most hyped up Major League Soccer player since Freddy Adu.

Not Ezequiel Barco

Ahh, so he’s American. Don’t they always get carried away when it comes to football?

Nope, he’s Argentinian. And he’s only 18.

What? Did he fail over in Argentina then?

Far from it. Barco came through the ranks at Independiente, making debut under Gabriel Milito.

When you remember you left the oven on

Why is that name familiar?

Milito won two La Liga titles, a Champions League medal and the Spanish Super Cup as a player with Barcelona.

Milito played during a time when every Argentine had long hair

That’s right. Back to Barco. Did he have any success under Milito?

Barco played an important role in Independiente’s Copa Sudamericana win last year, which is essentially South America’s version of the Europa League.

Cheer up mate, you’ve just scored

Why did he leave Argentina if he was doing so well?

Money talks. Atlanta United paid an MLS record to take the 18-year-old midfielder to Georgia, where he’ll be managed by fellow Argentine Tata Martino, formerly of Barcelona.

Sign on the dotted line

Who are Atlanta United? I’m an Encyclopedia of knowledge and I’ve never heard of them.

That’ll be because they’ve only entered MLS last year, finishing fourth in the Eastern Conference in their first attempt at life in the big leagues.

Quite the entrance

Heard the one about the Irishman, German and Jamaican?

Well Atalanta actually have two Irishman, two Germans and an Englishman, as well as four Argentines and a Venezuelan.

The perils of travelling to Minnesota away

So Barco will need some language lessons?

That’s probably a good idea.

That probably won’t get you through passport control

When can I see him play?

Atlanta’s first MLS game is this Saturday when they take on Houston Dynamo. Be there or be square.
