When it rains it pours for Arsene Wenger.
His side failed miserably in the league cup final against Man City as most of their best players went missing at Wembley.
There was a mild sense of competition in the first half until Arsenal’s schoolboy defending allowed Claudio Bravo to assist Sergio Aguero for the first goal.
It might feel like a lifetime ago but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was a brilliant Kyle Walker tackle from tapping in from two yards out inside the first 10 minutes.
However, after Pep Guardiola’s team took the lead all the life seemed to drain out of Arsenal until the final minutes when they were just shadows of themselves chasing City shadows.
Seriously from the moment Vincent Kompany scored City’s second goal after using a series of stepovers to win the corner that he diverted in, Arsenal disappeared.
City had the freedom of Wembley to combine intricate passes and utterly dominate possession and territory for the second half.
As the clock ticked pat 90 minutes Arsenal were 3-0 down and the referees whistle was a moment to put the Gunners out of their misery.
And with Twitter calling for Wenger’s head, the Arsenal manager being obliterated in the Sky Sports studio, even the referees joined in on taking the p***.
Wenger complained to the fourth official that there wasn’t enough injury time and why isn’t it longer.
“Why do you want more time?” was the fourth official’s response.
When the referees are trolling you it is probably time to take a long hard look at yourself.
Wenger tried to shoot right back at him saying it wasn’t up to the fourth official to judge whether to put one team out of its misery, but the damage was done.
