The pre-match build-up for Real Madrid vs PSG was all about one man — Rafael Nadal

Real Madrid vs PSG in the Champions League round of 16 is one of the biggest fixtures in the football calendar.

So it makes sense that the pre-match build-up at the Bernabeu was all about… Rafael Nadal?

As the players walked out, the home fans unveiled a massive tifo featuring the legendary Spanish tennis player and the words ‘Vamos Real!’

Nadal is a big football fan and is a known supporter of Real Madrid, but it still took many viewers, including us, by surprise.

Upon further research (thanks Twitter) it appears there may actually be some low-key elite banter at work.

PSG have won six league titles in their history while Nadal has won the French Open a record ten times.

The Spaniard is arguably the greatest clay court player of all time and has made Roland Garros in Paris something of a holiday home throughout his career.

If this theory proves correct then you have to congratulate the Real fans on their dedication to taking a cheeky dig at their opponents before kick-off.

However, Neymar and co were unfazed by the obnoxiously big image of Nadal.

The visitors took the lead after 33 minutes through Adrien Rabiot’s composed finish.

The ball broke kindly for Kylian Mbappe down the right flank and the French starlet whipped in a threatening cross.

Nacho did well to prevent Neymar tapping home but the ball fell to the late arriving Rabiot who struck it first time past the despairing Keylor Navas.

The hosts levelled just before half-time courtesy of a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.

Giovani Lo Celso was caught out of position and the Argentine midfielder put his hand on the Toni Kroos’ shoulder in the box; which was all the invitation the German needed to take a tumble.

Game on at 1-1… or should that be 15-15, Rafa?
