The launch of the latest Nike Mercurial Vapor was the talk of the boot world last week.
But over in China Alexandre Pato’s choice of footwear has been turning heads for a different reason.
The 28-year-old’s last game for Tianjin Quanjian came against Philippine side Ceres-Negros in an AFC Champions League qualifier.
As a Nike athlete you’d be expecting Pato to wear the latest boots on offer.
But Pato actually turned out in a pair of astros. Not that surprising, given Tianjin play on an artificial pitch.
The quirk of Pato’s boot selection was the fact the Brazilian was wearing the cheaper Nike Tiemo X Finale rather than the top of the line Tiempo X Proximo.
It’s quite pleasing to see a professional footballer turn out in a pair of astros that wouldn’t look out of place at your local 5-a-side pitches.
But does he get those black crumbs all over his house?
Former Blackburn and Mainz striker Anthony Modeste scored twice, the second of which Pato assisted, to hand Tianjin a 2-0 victory.
Proof that the player makes the boot, rather than the other way around.
We’re going to have to find a new excuse for playing s*** now.
