VAR causes mass confusion AGAIN as Fiorentina denied penalty against Juventus

Jordan Veretout was preparing to take the spot kick for nearly three minutes, but the referee then overturned his decision

It’s fair to see video technology in football is having a few teething problems.

A couple of weeks ago Liverpool’s FA Cup clash with West Brom descended into farce as the referee used VAR three times in the first half alone.

But on Friday night things got even weirder.

Juventus kept up their phenomenal recent form with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Fiorentina in Serie A.

Goals from Federico Bernardeschi – against the side he left for Juve in the summer – and Gonzalo Higuain helped set the Old Lady up nicely for their Champions League tie with Tottenham in midweek.

But they benefited from bizarre officiating in the first half.

Referee Marco Guida initially awarded Fiorentina a penalty in the 18th minute after Giorgio Chiellini appeared to handle the ball.

But after Jordan Veretout waited patiently to take the spotkick for a full THREE MINUTES the decision was then overturned for an offside decision instead.

Juventus, of course, capitalised on their stroke of luck to keep a 15th clean sheet in their last 16 games in all competitions.

Talk about Italian defensive nous.
