In an age when players are valuing trophies over loyalty more and more, this is a refreshing subversion.
Bacary Sagna has signed for relegation-bound Benevento.
The French right-back has been without a club since being released by Man City in the summer and has now committed to the team with the fewest points in Europe’s top five leagues this season.
Benevento have avoided defeat in only three of their 22 games this campaign.
The Italian club are languishing at the bottom of Serie A with just seven points to their name, doomed to certain relegation.
Most players would have swerved the sinking ship but Sagna’s reasoning for the deal is actually rather heartwarming.
“Football has become a business more than an actual sport, Benevento represents the heart and soul of what a club should be about.
“Passion, heart, hope, joy, love and a philosophy that is aligned to that of my own way of thinking in life.”
Ain’t that nice?
The Italian club have become popular across Europe because of their comically bad form.
Everyone loves an underdog.
Sagna was twice named in the Team of the Year during his Premier League years but only has an FA Cup (Arsenal) and a League Cup (Man City) to show for his decade in England.
Who said romance was dead?
