But Arsene Wenger was unable to meet West Brom’s asking price, leaving him empty-handed with less than four hours remaining in the window.

Arsenal were in the market for a new defender this month, with Evans high on their list of targets.

Manchester City had also been pursuing the North Ireland international after missing out on him last summer.

But Pep Guardiola eventually plumped to spend a club-record £57million on Aymeric Laporte instead, leaving Arsenal as sole runners for Evans’ signature.
