If we’ve learned anything over the years it’s not to trust Arsenal transfers until the contract is signed.
So when Arsenal transfer demigod David Ornstein broke the news that Arsene Wenger’s side were ‘close to reaching an agreement to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund’ we didn’t get too carried away.
The reported fee of £60million would make Aubameyang Arsenal’s most expensive ever transfer, although Dortmund need to find a replacement before any deal can go through.
Alexandre Lacazette is currently Arsenal’s club-record signing following his £46.5mil move from Lyon last summer.
However we’ve been there done that when it comes to strikers joining Arsenal.
If Twitter was to be believed then Gonzalo Higuain, Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez and Karim Benzema would all be banging in the goals for Arsenal.
But it’s not just strikers.
It wasn’t a transfer window until Yann M’Villa was ‘spotted’ at Arsenal’s training ground ahead of a phantom medical.
The same can be said for Mathieu Valbuena, Yoann Gourcuff and any other maverick French playmakers.
This explains the cautious response from Arsenal fans to the latest Aubameyang news.
But Ornstein is about as reliable as they come for transfer rumours, hence the jubilation from Arsenal fans every time he tweets.
If you’ve got a spare hour it’s well worth looking at the replies he gets to every tweet.
We can’t think of many better ways to kick off a Monday.
